This course requires completion of .5 lab hours per week to be arranged. Hours are to be completed with your private instructor, in the music building at the arranged time with you teacher. Attendance will be taken. Prior to the the 2nd Friday of classes, students must complete at least 1 lab hour out of the total 8 required hours.

Class make be repeated 4 times
Individual Instruction is an opportunity for music students to obtain college credit for one-on-one private study in one’s instrument or voice. The college may provide funding for lessons and private teachers. The class may be taken four (4) times for credit.
This class will focus on the application of performance skills learned in private lessons. Small performance groups (combos) will be organized based on playing ability. Tune learning, scales and chords will be addressed during the class meeting time.
In addition to the weekly class meeting, you must arrange with your assigned private teacher for a mutually agreeable time to have your private lesson. You must complete a total of 8 hours of private lessons during the course of the semester. The private lessons are frequently scheduled as half hour lessons each week.
You must do the following in order to receive the school-funded lessons:
· enroll in and complete at least one Mt. SAC performing organization;
· complete 8 hours of lessons or the equivalent with the assigned private teacher;
· participate in the final jury examination (Jury & Combo Concert)
· attend class regularly
· you are also urged to also be enrolled in the music major theory sequence.
GRADING:
Jury Exam 300 points
Combo Concert 300 points
Private Teacher Evaluation 300 points
Class Attendance 100 points
A = 90 – 100 %
B = 80 – 90%
C = 70 – 80%
D = 60 – 70%
F = below 59%
Attendance policy – Weekly attendance is expected. 10 points will be deducted for every unexcused absence, If you accrue 3 unexcused absences, you can be dropped from the program at the instructor’s discretion. If one student misses a class the whole group suffers.
ELIGIBILITY: Instrumentalist may be at a beginning level to enroll in this class, but must be enrolled in an ensemble.

ENROLLMENT: You will not be assigned a private teacher until you are official enrolled in the class.
JURY EXAMS: The jury exam is your final exam and is a performance for members of the music faculty. The schedule for juries will be announced early in the semester. In addition to solo repertoire, all instrumental students may be expected to play major, natural, harmonic minor scales for juries at a moderate tempo. The scale requirements are left up to the private instructor. Sight/rhythm reading may also be on your jury exam. Please utilize the music lab to increase your rhythmic accuracy. Failure to perform a final jury will result in a failing grade (F)
COMBO CONCERT: The combo concert the 2nd half of your final exam. In this concert you will perform the music that you have been rehearsing during your scheduled combo meeting.
